The Karachi University Film school students are on their home stretch for completing their semester films. There are seven short films coming out around the end of May 2010. Five are from third year students while two are from the second year batch, for whom this is their first exposure to film making. The five films from the third year batch are all fiction, and the two from second year are non fiction. There are a diversity of topics treated in some most unusual ways. All films are being produced at Eckova (town campus) under the guidance and mentorship of Sarwar Mushtaq. |

About Eckova
As we continue to grow, a number of welcome changes have taken place at Eckova, and our profile has broadened to include new areas of activity in the field of film and video. One very important area of growth has been capacity building and training for young and upcoming filmmakers, including workshops, affiliations with international organizations and festivals as well as extensive teaching the University of Karachi.
Another area of growth has been our work related to the environment and conservation. Lastly we have ventured beyond the non fiction realm and currently have fiction pieces in the works. As we forge ahead, our work with documentaries and other non fiction genres of course continues. We are pleased and grateful for the confidence, support and collaboration of our customers, partners, students and well wishers.

Rang e Naza: Fading Strokes
Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage has been fueled by a variety of traditional artistic art forms such as truck art, Sufi poster art, cinema billboard art etc. Hand painted cinema billboards of yester years are one of the icons of Pakistan’s entertainment industry and street culture. Its roots are buried deep in our history dating back to the Mughal era. Although for decades these billboards have ornamented Pakistan’s city life, their days are now numbered largely due to the decline of the local movie industry and the panaflex invasion.
Rang-e-Naza is a film that celebrates and narrates the story of this very important icon of Pakistan’s cultural identity- hand painted cinema billboards. The film brings us close to the hay day of Pakistani cinema and gigantic hand painted billboards used to promote them and takes a closer look at the artists and craftsmen who are behind these creations. It brings us forward to the present day when this art has all but disappeared and the artists are fighting this losing battle to keep it all alive.
The film will have its European premiere at LIDF 2010. See details |

Film Types and Objectives
Films vary as to their purpose and objectives. This will impact the type of film that you will make. In the initial planning of a film decide on what type of film you want to make. Who will be the primary audience for the film, and who are the secondary audiences. What would be the distribution plan. For example will the film normally be shown in small meetings, at seminars and as an opener with discussion following – or would it be shown on television or internet. What would be the language requirements, the best length for the film, and formats. These are the main types of films used by nonprofits.
- Project documentation
- Fundraising films
- Awareness Raising
- Advocacy
- Training films
